From Board Game Geek:

A real challenge for strategists: build a new postal stagecoach operation. But what does the best connection look like? Do you plan a short but difficult route, play it safe instead? With the right strategy, this game lets players build routes and stagecoaches, found offices in cities and expand into new countries. All the while making good use of public departments and having a lucky hand when planning new routes. Thurn und Taxis: The mail's here!

From the publisher's website:

In 1490, Kaiser Maximilian I awarded Franz von Taxis the contract to deliver mail between the Kaiser's residences in Innsbruck and Brussels. He did such a good job, that postal services in the country continue to be connected with the name Thurn and Taxis. With the introduction of postal carriages in the middle of the 17th century, members of the family were raised to Count status and given the hereditary title of Postmaster General. The game begins at this point in history. Can you emulate the achievements of this family and build a successful postal network? Do you have the talent to connect the right cities to create an effective network and not lose sight of the need to acquire new carriages when they are needed? Plan your moves carefully and watch your opponents' moves carefully, so you are prepared to respond to them. The game takes you back in time and gives you challenges that will bring you back to the game over and over.

"Outside Baiern" Variant:

Players may find the game simpler if they play the bonus tiles: "outside Baiern" as though they read: "all provinces". A player could only earn such a bonuss tile when he had at least one city in every province. As Baiern is so large, it is unlikely that a player will ever have a city in every province except Baiern, so this change is likely to have little actual effect on game play, except to make the game more easily understood.

8.5 "Pasted On Theme, but the Glue Never Shows! " by Andrew MacLeod

Thurn and Taxis is beautiful! Really, any number of themes could have been used for this game system, but the postal routes of the 17th century Holy Roman Empire have been portrayed with exquisite care and artistry. It's so well portrayed that I frequently forgot about my game plans, so entranced was I by the board and cards. Luck of the draw and strategy take up about equal parts in this game, with a little more weight being given to luck. However, there are many ways one can advance in T&T, and so a player must always be looking forward to future decision making: shall I just dash ahead to improve upon my carriage technology? Or should I just fill up this province with post offices? It's a challenging game, made all the better by simple rules and not a huge investment of time in playing it. It is AT LEAST as good as Carcassonne as a gateway game to the hobby, and far exceeds it in terms of graphics.
