Elfenland is Alan Moon's popular remake of his 1992 hit Elfenroads. Play consists of four rounds. In each round, players position counters to facilitate travel based on the cards they possess. A point is earned for each city the elf visits. At the end of four rounds, the elf with the most points is the winner!

In Elfenland, the board has 20 Elfen cities, connected by roads. These roads pass through one of four terrain types (forests, plains, mountains and deserts). On a round, players receive 4 tokens and 8 cards (the cards and the tokens all indicate a mode of transportation). First, players take turns place as many counters as they want, upon roads. In the next phase of a round, players match cards up against the counters placed on roads (note that they may place cards on counters placed by other players!), moving Elfs from city to city depending on the played card-token combos. The key is, not all the transportation types work on all kinds of roads! For example, Unicorns may travel over mountains but not across the plains and Giant Pigs are willing to travel across plains and through forests, but can't cross mountains. The key to the game, therefore, lies in managing your tiles and cards and taking advantage of your opponents' tile placements!

At the end of four rounds, the player whose Elf has visited the most cities, is the winner.

8 "Recommended for families" by Rating: 8

A classic fantasy board game with lovely components, fairly light and suitable as a family game. Requires careful planning of routes, and has some player interaction. 1998 SDJ winner. The ElfenGold expansion makes it more suitable for serious gamers, but it is a great family game as is.
