In The Settlers of Catan you control a group of settlers trying to tame the wilds on the remote but rich island of Catan. Start by revealing the island's many port sites and regions: plains, meadows, mountains, hills, forests and desert. The random mix creates a different board for virtually every game.

Then embark on a quest to settle the island. Guide your settlers to victory by clever trading and cunning development. Instead of money, you use combinations of resources-grain, wool, ore, brick and timber-to purchase development cards or build roads, settlements and cities. Acquire your resources through trades or the luck of the dice. But beware! Someone might cut off your road or buy a monopoly! And you never know when the robber will appear and steal away with your precious gains!

THIS IS THE VERY BEST GAME EVER!! You'll fall in love with it soooo fast. IT'S AWSOME!!

If you're looking at the bad side of it, peoples turns can take sometime very long. If you only have the first addition then it's just as good as a normal board game.

Thats about all I don't really like about it! :) I Promise you will love this game if you buy it! ESPECIALLY IF YOU GET ALL OF THE ADDITIONS TO MAKE IT MORE FUN!

very fun game, the board chages every time, so its never the same!

9.5 "Player Interaction Classic!" by Andrew MacLeod

Arguably one of the greatest boardgames ever made. In terms of player interaction, it is probably THE best, as each player is always doing something, with very little down time. I fell in love with it five years ago and now own several expansions. Settlers rules!!!

9.5 "Not over-rated" by Enders Game

The high ratings for this game may seem over rated. But trust me, this is a modern classic worthy of superlatives. What attracts me to this game is that it is essentially a game involving economics and development, but without using money in the Monopoly style fashion! Resources, trading, development - these are some of the game mechanics that make Settlers of Catan work.

The learning curve is not that great, and even my eight year old son was able to get the hang of the game after seeing it played a couple of times. It is simple to learn, yet not shallow, because a wide range of strategies are possible. Unlike Monopoly-type or Risk-type games, one player does not become a tyrant or tycoon who spoils the fun for other players, because there are numerous different paths to victory (eg if one can't build cities, one can gain points by building the longest road, the largest army, or earning victory points with development cards). This variety makes the game challenging and interesting, and leads to a high level of replayability.

One of the only things that the game lacks is a scoreboard to track current point progress (the Settlers of Canaan variation, for instance, does have a scoreboard, and all players agreed this was an improvement). But this is a minor quibble. Settlers of Catan is an excellent board game, and you're almost sure to fall in love with it the first time you play it!

Since moving to Germany in 2001 we learned to play Settlers from a Missionary Friend (Dave-the greatest friend) and have been addicted ever since. We have introduced the game to many people some of which have moved back to the states and have taken the game with them. We have heard how some families have bonded again because of this game. Enough good cannot be said about this game!! I recommend it to anyone and of course the addition of "Cities and Knights" is more intense and addicting. Gotta get it!!

A great thinking game that really pulls you in. Wonderful for all ages especially strategy enthusiasts.

10 "best game I have played" by Crazy over Settlers

This is an amazing game. We have played this with all of our friends and now they all have there own and we are expanding into the add on's. It is the best game I have played.

What else can be written that's new when it comes to this title? For many, it was their introduction to "German gaming"(Euro/designer gaming). It's a classic that deserves it's place in the German games Hall of Fame(if such a thing were to exist). The only way to improve this title is to play it with a deck of dice instead of 2 d-6's. I find it alittle ironic (and sad) that a company called German Boardgame Co. doesn't carry the original classic German version of Settlers of Catan. It was put out (as we all know) by Kosmos and has the best bits and graphics of all versions on the market. That's a subjective opinion but one that is widely held amongst gamers and fans of this title. At very least, it would be nice to have the choice between Kosmos version (German) and the Mayfair (English) version. I'd settle for the French version, the graphics are basically the same as the German version and quality of components are almost on par with the German(Kosmos) version. I'm wondering if others feel the same way.

10 "Amazing" by Mark Knutson

This is the most addicted to a board game I've been since I learned to play risk and Axis and Allies. Easy to learn and easy to play. Quick game times allow you to try new things and then start over.

10 "A True Classic!" by Christine Biancheria

This is just an excellent and immensely popular, immensely interactive and fun game. A few people will be put off by the luck factor involved, given that there is a lot of dice-rolling going on, but this can be offset through clever initial play. What a unique and wonderful game. Buy it.

9 "Can't...Stop...Pla-a-a-a-y-y-ing..." by The Cotton Duke

What can I say? I'm hooked

It started like "maybe we could do something like play a board geame?" Then it became "come over to my house and well play a board game." Then " EVERYONE COME TO MY HOUS AND WE'LL PLAY SETLERS OF CATAN!!!"

Now I play it every weekend. I just can't stop. I told my doctor about it and he showed me the "Setlers of Catan" addicts ward of the hospital to try to deter me from becoming one of them. But it's just too much fun! Mwahahahahaha!

9 "Extremely Addictive!" by Irma Lambert

My housemate introduced me to it about 6 weeks ago and I've been wanting to play it at least once a week since then. I did like boardgames as a kid and played a few, but this one beats it all. Didn't think I'd ever enjoy playing boardgames as an adult!

We usually play it with three people, and it can be as fast as 1 hour (especially when you ignore 7s :) ) or as long as 3 hours, if you spend ages on the trading which is half the fun. The only quibble might be that it is of course a 'capitalistic' game and competitive types like me have to be careful not to get carried away.

In any case I think it's great and every household should have one! I am spreading it rapidly around my friends and family and can't wait to try the extensions..

Every game is different due to the variable set up. Constant interaction keeps you involved weather it is your turn or not. Highly recommended

CAN'T STOP PLAYING!!!!

10 "My brother-in-law will play it !!" by Heath

I had listened to an interview about the German Boardgame Company on the CBC while driving home one evening and stuck the website in to the back of my mind somewhere. It wasn't until two weeks later that the website popped back in to the daylight of my mind and conveniently I was surfing the web at that time.

Settlers of Catan was the game I remembered them talking about. I remembered the way they had detailed the differences to most North American boardgames.

My family members are boardgame enthusiats of all kinds, we even sat at a table around Christmas and played RISK 2089AD for over six hours straight. That was a long and complicated game. But back to Settlers of Catan...

Totally, without a doubt, the Settlers of Catan is now on our families top 5 boardgame list. I only bought it a month ago and this past weekend at the cottage myself, my wife, my mom, my sister, (with the aid of my ten year old), my other sister and my brother-in-law (who does not like boardgames or card games but enjoyed this) played it five times in two evenings. The second night we were up until 3:00 am (not my daughter) playing.

The random board layout for each new game makes it a new experience for each new game. The rules are simple and make sense. The game can last a little longer than two hours but I think that is because of the length of time we spent considering trades. Strategy is definitely required but in the end it comes down to the luck of the roll to get the resources you need to build or buy what you need to be the first to 10 Victory Points.

The game is definitely more expensive than other boardgames on our shelves, but I have no doubt that this game will be played more than any other game sitting on those shelves.

I am actually back at the website today to order the expansion pack and the army pack so 5-6 people can play (some had to sit out from time to time and that doesn't go over well) and to add another element to the game. I don't even know what the army pack will do to the game, but I have no doubt that it will make it even more fun, if that in itself is even possible.

BUY IT!

10 "Absolutely Amazing!" by Vivian

I actually played the original version (Die Siedlers von Catan) that a friend brought back from Germany. I can't believe how much fun we had that night!!! I love that the board changes with every game and the outcome is totally unpredictable because your luck can change with just one roll of the dice! Highly recommended.

9 "The one that started it all" by Christian Monterroso

I picked up a copy of Settlers of Catan as a Christmas present for my brother over 2 years ago. Best. Present. Ever. Since then, we have played the game countless times, and several people have had to purchase their own copy. No matter where we go these days, a game of Settlers awaits us.

Settlers Of Catan is close to the perfect family game. It's easy to learn, plays in about 1 to 1.5 hours, there is great player interaction, requires some strategy but needs some luck as well, it's different than most 'classic' North American board game....the list goes on and on.

If you don't have Settlers yet, don't wait any longer.

10 "Timeless Classic" by David Leung

If you're gonna play any one boardgame, this is the one to play. A different board every game and trading with fellow players makes for an extremely fun and exciting game with no down-time between turns.

This was the first German game that I played and I always seem to play it again and again....timeless!

10 "Amazing Game!" by Jonathan Dietrich
This game rocks! I have played a lot of games, and this is a SOLID game that is enjoyable by all. It is a non-destructive race to build up your settlements, featuring a lot of trading. It offers enough complexities to keep the seasoned interested, while maintaining an elegant simplicity which allows beginers to pick it up with ease. This coupled with Seafarers makes an EXCELLENT investment, with amazing entertainment per dollar ratio!
