Pasted On Theme, but the Glue Never Shows!
by Andrew MacLeod
Thurn and Taxis is beautiful! Really, any number
of themes could have been used for this game
system, but the postal routes of the 17th century
Holy Roman Empire have been portrayed with
exquisite care and artistry. It's so well
portrayed that I frequently forgot about my game
plans, so entranced was I by the board and cards.
Luck of the draw and strategy take up about equal
parts in this game, with a little more weight
being given to luck. However, there are many ways
one can advance in T&T, and so a player must
always be looking forward to future decision
making: shall I just dash ahead to improve upon my
carriage technology? Or should I just fill up this
province with post offices? It's a challenging
game, made all the better by simple rules and not
a huge investment of time in playing it. It is AT
LEAST as good as Carcassonne as a gateway game to
the hobby, and far exceeds it in terms of graphics.
